Soviet Russian Cosmonaut. Russia's third cosmonaut to travel into space in August 1962, he set an endurance record, circling the Earth 64 times in 96 hours. Named a Hero of the Soviet Union two times, Major General Nikolayev was part of the early Soviet cosmonaut corps, which included Yuri Gagarin, who was the first man to fly into space in 1961. Nikolayev accumulated a total of 200 space hours during his career. The first Deputy Director of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, he retired in 1982. He is buried on the premises of the Space Exploration Museum in the village of Shorshely, Chuvashia (or Chuvashiya), Russian Federation.
