Cardiovascular surgeon. He was born at La Plata (Prov. de Buenos Aires). In 1949 he graduated from La Universidad Nacional de La Plata, becoming a doctor in Medicine. Was the first who did the bypass (saphenus vein graft) surgeon of the coronary arteries. On may, 1967, he replaced the coronary artery obstruction of a 51 year old woman at the Cleveland and Clinic, Ohio, USA. This was the beginning of the bypass surgery which gradually developed worldwide and saved millions of lives of heart patients. During his career, Dr. Favaloro performed nearly 13,000 by-passes. In 1971 he went back to Buenos Aires, where he had set up the "Favaloro Foundation" to continue helping heart patients. Sadly, on July 30, 2000, he committed suicide by shoting himself in the heart.
On August 12, 2000, his remains were cremated and scattered at Jacinto Arauz, Provincia de La Pampa, where he began his career 50 years earlier. He wrote "Recuerdos de un Médico Rural" (1980), "De la Pampa a los Estados Unidos" (1993) y "Don Pedro y la Educación" (1994) and more than 300 researching works.
