Funeral for WR Allensworth, 84, who died Thursday, will be Monday at 10:30 AM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Mr. Allensworth was stricken while walking home from his home to the business district, and was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Mary's Hospital at 10 AM.
He was born February 12, 1888, at Augusta, and moved to Galesburg when a boy. He was graduated from Galesburg High School in 1906.
He married Frances Mason September 6, 1925 at Savanna. She survives with two sons, David and Robert of Galesburg; two daughters, Mrs. Nancy A McIntosh of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Sara A Michl of Salt Lake City, UT; two sisters, Mrs. Mary A Creighton, editor of the Galesburg Post, and Mrs. Aralou Stone of San Jose, CA, and four grandchildren.
Mr. Allensworth was a member of Central Congregational Church and had been a member of the Elks Lodge and Soangetaha Country Club for more than half a century. He had served as a director of First Galesburg National Bank & Trust Company since 1931, and was a member of the Galesburg Board of Education 1943-49.
He was a partner with Lee Wright in the Wright-Allensworth Motor Company, a Chevrolet dealership, from 1920 to 1952, and was president of Allensworth Finance Company.
From 1906 to 1926, he was a partner with the late Harlan Little in a public dance business. They built the roof garden atop the Weinberg Arcade and operated it until 1947. They also owned roof gardens in five other cities in Illinois and Iowa.
Mr. Allensworth helped organize the first youth center here in what was the old Galesburg Post Office. He raised funds to keep it operating during World War II. He had served as an Army lieutenant during World War I.
The family said memorials may be made to Knox College.
