David's obituary states that he was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. However, despite extensive searching, this information cannot be verified. All the information about David Duane is apparently for a David Colson Duane who was from Virginia, is buried in Virginia, and who may have fought with Morgan's Raiders. Perhaps the war stories this David Duane told were misinterpreted; he may have fought Morgan's Raiders but against them, not with them. Morgan's Raiders did fight a battle with the Michigan 25th Infantry in Kentucky. The Civil War grave registration database has removed David Marshall Duane's listing as a Confederate Soldier after the error was brought to their attention.

David was married circa 1870 to Sarah Jane Richards, daughter of Henry Richards and Frances Farnsworth. Sarah was born November 1843 in East Hamburg, Erie County, New York.

On Jun 1, 1875 David, Sarah and David Jr. aged 1 year, 9 mo. were living in Buffalo, Erie County, New York where David was listed as a carpenter.

On 21 June 1880, the couple lived in Alcona, Alcona County, Michigan with three sons -- David, Henry, and John. David worked as a house carpenter.

On 8 June 1900, David and Sarah lived in Charlevoix, Charlevoix County, Michigan with three sons -- David, Peter, and Henry. He worked as a house carpenter as did son Henry. Son David was a sailor and Peter was a day laborer.

David died from apoplexy at his home on E. 14th Street in Traverse City on 18 January 1908. Sarah died on 16 October 1908, reportedly in Bellaire, Antrim County. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

David and Sarah (Richards) Duane had seven children (four dead before 1900):

i. DAVID Marshall DUANE was born on 13 September 1873 in East Hamburg, New York. For unknown reasons, David later maintained he was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The year of his birth has been variously stated as 1867 (death Cert) and 1887 (obit). His headstone says 1859 - 1953.

ii. HENRY B. (Harry) DUANE was born in September 1875 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York.

iii. JOHN H. DUANE was born on 9 September 1877 in Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan and died there 11 Feb 1882.

iv. PETER S. DUANE was born in July 1882 in Michigan and died in 1924 in an accident in Gratiot County.
