Born as James Terpenny. His father died when James was very young and he assumed his stepfather's surname, Davis. His first wife was Kate Myres Sabey. They were married 10 Feb 1879 in a lavish ceremony in Jacksonville, Florida. At the time James was said to be, "...a prominent Syracuse merchant." Kate was the only child of a well-to-do father and the only grandchild of wealthy maternal grandparents. Accordingly, he and Kate figured prominently in Syracuse society.

They had two sons: Myres M. Davis who died in 1906 of endocarditis and William Holland Davis who lived in Pelham Manor, Westchester County, NY for much of his life. Myres Davis had no children. William Holland Davis had a son James and daughter Kate who both lived to marry and have children.

Kate died of a stroke on 10 April 1910. Later that year on 22 Nov 1910 in Poughkeepsie, NY James married Susan Scott who was an artist. Sometime after the 1920 census they moved to Piedmont, California where Susan died in 1925. James died in Piedmont on 30 Dec 1937. He was cremated and the ashes were interred in the Myres Family Vault on 18 Jan 1938.
