British actor, whose inimitable voice and style were utilized in a wide variety of roles from revue to the classics, first appeared in a walk-on part at the Globe Theatre, London, in 1927. He potrayed Baron de Charlus in BBc radio's "Proust Reconstructions" and in 1967 put on a one-man show based on the nondramatic writings of George Bernard Shaw.
