Butterworth came to the United States from England when he was 16 years old. He operated a general store in Franklin, Idaho, for many years. He spent the last two decades of his life in Salt Lake City. He had a unique collection of relics containing more than a thousand items which he donated to the town of Franklin and a relic hall to preserve them in. He was married to Fanny Emma Lee for 51 years. After her death in 1932, he married Pearl Snyder.
