Religious Figure. Raised a Protestant, she converted to Catholicism in 1939 after several severe health problems including a diagnosis of incurable stomach cancer. It was in 1936 during a stay in a Canton, Ohio hospital run by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine that Rhoda learned about St. Therese of the Little Flower, learned to pray the Rosary, and was given Sacred Heart of Jesus badges. In May of 1939 after her conversion, Rhoda experienced her first visitation by Jesus Christ in her Canton home. Before her death in 1948, she recounted 28 visitations by either Christ or Saint Therese during which her cancer and other ailments were cured. Beginning on Good Friday 1942, stigmata appeared on her forehead and later on her hands and feet. In 1943 Rhoda is credited with curing a teenage girl who grew up to be Mother Angelica. Over the years many people have credited their healings to Rhoda's intervention, and in 2012 she was named a Servant of God, a first step on the road to sainthood.
