Long Illness Fatal to C.R. Howard, Mt. Hope
Clarence R Howard 65, Mt Hope oil man and grain dealer, who formerly
was prominent in the milling industry in Wichita died at a local
hospital this morning following an illness of several months.
Mr Howard was stricken with a stroke of paralysis in January and
since that time had been comfined to his bed.
Born July 10, 1869 in Monroe Center, Ashtabula county, Ohio
Mr Howard in 1874, the family settling on a farm near Burrton.
Mr Howard attended the Burrton high school being graduate in
1887, and later attended the Lawrence Business college. He was for
a time engaged in the banking business with his father in Burrton.
In 1871 Mr Howard moved with his family to Wichita, where in
company with his father he was one of the organizers of the Union Mill,
which later became the Howard Milling company of this city.
He was married in 1902 to Ella Taft of Wichita. For four years. from
1910 to 1914, he served as a member of the school board here.
In 1914, Mr Howard moved with his family to Mt Hope where he became
engaged in the grain, and oil business. In Mt Hope he took a
prominent part in the affairs of the town and served for several years
on the town council. He was always working for civic advancement
and was instrumental in promoting
many civic improvements in Mt Hope. He was a member of the Woodmen lodge
and of the Mt Hope Federated church
Mr Howard was one of the leadinging men in the oil industry in the
state and in 1925 he was elected president of the Kansas Oil Men's
association. His wide business contacts made him many friends in all
sections of the state.
Besides hi wido Ella, Mr Howard leaves two sisters, Miss Fannie Howard
and Mrs Louis Gerteis both of Wichita; a daughter Vera Francis Howard, Ann Arbor, Mich;
two sons, Ralph, Mt Hope, and Paul, Wichita and a grandaughter,
Sara Ellen of Mt Hope, His mother Mrs J E Howard, wellknown Wichitian,
died only a few months ago.
Funeral services will be announced later by the Jewel mortuary
of Mt Hope.
