World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Birr, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Rigiment, British Army. On November 16, 1915, actions near La Brique, France, a man was badly wounded and lying in the open unable to move, in full view of and about 350 yards from the enemy's trenches. Private Caffrey on his own started to go out and rescue him. On the first attempt he was driven back by shrapnel fire. He tried again and succeeded in reaching and bandaging the wounded man, but just as he was lifting him up, the man was shot in the head. Private Caffrey bandaged him again and brought him to safety. He then returned and brought in the other wounded man back to his lines. For most prestigious award for gallantry, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and invested with Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on the February 23, 1916. He later achived the rank of Sergeant and served in the Home Guard during World War II. He died at age 61 in Derby, England.
