British Army General, Perak War Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on April 14, 1876 for his actions as a captain in the 1st Gurkha Rifles, Bengal Staff Corps, British Indian Army, on December 20, 1875 at Perak, British Malaya (now Malaysia) during the Perak War (1875 to 1876). Born the oldest son of a British military officer in Allahabad, British India, he received his education at Truro College in Cornwall, England and Cheltenham College in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. In September 1859 he received a commission in the British Indian Army and served in the North-West Frontier during the Umbeyla Campaign, followed by the Perak War in British Malaya, during which he won the Victoria Cross for gallantry, and the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 to 1880). He later achieved the rank of general and retired in that position in November 1901. He died from an extended illness at Westward Ho!, Devon, England at the age of 62. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he received the India General Service Medal (with Umbeyla clasp), the Afghanistan Medal (with Peiwar Kotal and Hazara clasps), and Companion of the Order of the Bath. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 20 December 1875 in Perak, Malaya, Captain Channer was the first to jump into the enemy's stockade to which he had been despatched with a small party to obtain intelligence of its strength and position. The stockade was formidable and it would have been impossible to bring guns to bear on it because of the steepness of the hill and the density of the jungle. If Captain Channer and his party had not been able to take the stockade in this manner it would have been necessary to resort to the bayonet, with consequent great loss of life."
