Lieutenant General, Madras Staff Corps, Indian Army.

On 10 January 1837, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Indian Army and served with the 48th Madras Native Infantry. Promoted to Captain on 2 May 1847. Promoted to Major and assigned to the Madras Staff Corps on 18 February 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 18 February 1863. Appointed second-in-command of the 28th Madras Native Infantry Regiment on 1 November 1865. On 13 May 1867, he was appointed commanding officer of his regiment and served in this capacity through 13 January 1875. Promoted to Major General on 16 January 1880 and to Lieutenant General on 1 April 1882.
