James S. Robinson ~ Found Dead in a Chair at His Home on Francis Street
At 7:30 yesterday morning James S. Robinson died suddenly at his residence 21 Francis Street. He conducted a confectionery store at that place and yesterday he arose as usual, went to the barn and took care of his horses. He returned to the house and sat in a chair reading a newspaper. His wife who was in the bedroom heard him groan and hastily going to the room where he was, found him sitting in a chair, his head leaning against a desk. He was dead. His death had been sudden and without a struggle, for his glasses were still on his head. Dr. Wallace Clarke was summoned, but found he had died of heart disease. Mr. Robinson had suffered from this disease for six years and all the physicians who attended him had told him he would die in this way some time.
James Seneca Robinson was born in the town of Casenova, Madison County, September 23, 1833. He lived in Perryville till about 1857, when he removed to Wisconsin, where he remained three years. Returning to the east he located at Chittenango, where he learned the carpenter trade. In the spring of 1876 he removed to New York Mills, where he lived for three and a half years, being engaged in carpenter work and in building houses for himself. He came to Utica and after (large blacked out line where the fold was) went to Perryville where he remained three years. Nine years ago he returned to Utica and since that time has kept a confectionery store at 21 Francis Street.
In September 1864 he enlisted in the Onondaga county regiment and went on the front remaining until the close of the war. His chaplin was Reverend J. W. Simpson now pastor of Dryer Memorial Church, and since that time has belonged to the Methodist faith. He was a member of Post Ross while in New York Mills and Post Baron in Utica and deeply devoted to Grand Army interests. He was of a quiet and domestic disposition and greatly respected by all. At Perryville, October 22, 1854 [or 1856], Mr. Robinson married Miss Maria C. Storms, who survives. His children are Mrs. J. J. Clark of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Mrs Robert J. Chambers and Smith W. Robinson of Utica. He leaves one brother Smith Robinson of Canastota, and three sisters, Mrs. F. J. Huyck of Perryville, Mrs. Farley of Lockport and Mrs. Lucy Dickman [Dickinson]of Saliva [Salina], Kansas. Prayer will be offered by Reverend J. W. Simpson at the residence of the son 26 Francis Street tomorrow morning and the remains will be taken to Perryville for interment.
