US General. A 1786 graduate of Yale College with a degree in divinity, his military career began in 1803 upon his commission as a major in the Massachusetts Militia. From 1809 to 1810, he served as a member of the Massachusetts State Legislature as representative from Hatfield, Hampshire County. In 1812, Maltby was appointed a member of the United States Presidential Electoral College. In 1813, he was promoted to Brigadier General and served throughout the remainder of the War of 1812 commanding the Second Brigade of the Fourth Massachusetts Division. During the war, he was responsible for the defense of Boston Harbor. In 1816, he was again elected to the Massachusetts State Legislature. Maltby moved to Waterloo, Seneca County, New York in 1818. He authored several books concerning warfare, including "Elements of War," "Military Tactics," and "A Treatise on Courts-Martial and Military Law."
