After a courageous battle against breast cancer, Gwendolyn Antoinette Brown (Mae Mae) laid down her armor and ascended to heaven on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the age of 61.
Gwen was born August 31, 1953 to Harvie and Mary Brown Sr., in Galveston, Texas. Although 11 years younger than her brother, Gwen's authoritative nature took over and she became the shepherd over all of her siblings. Gwen became acquainted with Christ at an early age due to the influence of her mother and was a devoted member of Bible Day's Revival Church in Galveston, Texas. Throughout the remainder of her earthly life, she maintained a secure relationship with the heavenly father.
Gwen attended Ball High School in Galveston, Texas graduating in 1971. Shortly thereafter, Gwen met and married Marshall Watson, Jr. on January 4th, 1972. That following year she experienced a life altering moment. May 25, 1973 she gave birth to her only child, Marsha Renee Watson. Although the marital union didn't last, Gwen continued to grow and evolve as a person.
As Gwen entered the second phase of her life, she met a gentle spirt while working at Lipton Tea named Isaac Otis Wren III (Bobby). They solidified their union and wed on December 8, 1978. Although they planned to live happily ever after, fate had different plans for them. After three years of marriage, they lovingly parted ways.
Despite both divorces, Gwen remained friendly with both of her ex-husbands along with their new wives (her wife-in-laws) and assorted family members.
After working at a variety of places, Gwen established her career at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. As an employee with the Pediatrics Department Gwen continued to blossom and formed lifelong relationships during her tenure. After 20+ years of service, Gwen opted to take early retirement. Although it cost her financially, caring for her ailing parents was of the utmost importance.
Gwen continued to weather life's storms with serenity and grace but her spirit was renewed with the birth of her only grandchild. On March 31st, 2009 Kennedy Giselle Brooks entered the world and slammed into Gwen's heart with the strength of Hurricane Ike. Kennedy was and STILL is the ultimate love of her life.
Gwen never met a stranger and was loved by anyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. Known too many as a Sister, Big Nanny, Aunt Gwen, Granny, Cuz, Mae Mae, Ms. Gwen or Mama G. she's irreplaceable, deeply loved and undoubtedly missed.
Gwen is preceded in death by her parents, Harvie Lee and Mary Brown, and brother Harvie Lee Brown, Jr. Gwen leaves to cherish her memory her daughter; Marsha Watson and Granddaughter Kennedy Brooks; siblings Charlie Brown, Ida Brown Pete and Harvie Brown III (Margaret); devoted nieces and nephews, O'Neill Pete III (Norja), Sherondria Brown, Ecko Dotson, Demetria Charles, Falcon Brown; Fenix Brown, Felicia Melton; great nieces and nephews, Payton Faison, Taylor Kemp, O'Neill Pete IV, Keeshon Charles; spiritual siblings, Ernestine Bryant (Freddie), Ann Holmes, Monica Tolden (Jimmy), Regina Robinson (Charles), Annette Cook (Ray), as well as a host of other family and friends.
The family will receive guests for visitation and fellowship, Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 1PM until 3PM, at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, Texas 77591. A Memorial Service will be held a 3PM, immediately following the visitation. Memorials can be sent to the funeral home.

I have known Gwen since the first day she went to work at UTMB in Pediatrics department where I worked. I think it must have been in 1980 or maybe 1981. We became immediate friends. Also worked with a lady name Bertha and the three of us were the three musketeers on our end of the third floor for a while. Gwen never met a stranger and everyone just loved her so much. I wstched her daughter grown up and turn into a beautiful young woman who now has a beautiful daughter. Gwen watched Laurie grow up from about age 5 to 16 when she died. She was there for me every day after that and helped me with the funeral arrangements and even viewed her body for me because I just couldn't make myself see her lying in a coffin...We went through good times and bad times, happy times and sad times. She could light up the whole room when she laughed or smiled and scare the heck out of everybody when she sneezed... I have so much more to say....
