Her first cat was named Cali. My mother's cat had some kittens and Laurie picked out the calico one. We got her in 1985 and she lived until 2004. She started out as an inside cat but when we got another kitten in 1987, Cali got jealous and wouldn't come inside any more. She lived the rest of her life outdoors but stayed in the yard and around it. She got cancer in her ear in 2004. We had it cut out but it came back. We had to have her put to sleep when we knew she was suffering. She was 19. She is buried in the yard behind Laurie's bedroom window. Cali was Laurie's last pet. Every part of Laurie that we had left was gone when Cali died.
In 1987 someone dropped off a siamese mix kitten in the ditch in front of my mother's house. Laurie wanted to go get him so we did. She named him Fuzzy. The first time Cali saw him she hissed and wouldn't let Laurie hold her. Laurie cried and we took Fuzzy back where we had found him. Later that day Laurie wanted to go back and get him so we did. Cali didn't like him so she stayed outside from then on. Fuzzy had a lot of fleas so stupid me dipped him when he was too young and he almost died. After I dipped him Laurie and I went shopping and when we came back we saw that he looked sick and had diarrhea. I immediately washed him with soap and water and called the vet and took him to an emergency clinic. He was given a shot and the vet said he probably would have been okay without the shot, that washing him was the right thing to do but since we had taken him in he gave him the shot anyway. Fuzzy was a very lovign cat and stayed indoors for a long time before he started going outdoors and became an outdoor cat. In 1999 at the age of 12 he began to have neurological problems and after several visits to the vet we decided to put him to sleep. Another part of Laurie had died.
In 1989 a black and white kitten kept coming in our yard. We kept taking it out but he was insistent. Once when I was backing out of the garage I heard what sounded like a cat scream. I had run over the kitten. We took him to the vet and he was checked out and to all of our amazement nothing was broken or hurt. I guess because he was so young and his bones were still soft. Whatever the reason, we decided that kitten wanted us so bad that we kept him. Laurie named him Baby. He lived indoors until six months after Laurie died. He slept with her at night. He loved to play all day and he slept in our bedroom window when we were at work. He loved playing with the twisties you get on bread, rolls and stuff... He would throw them in the air and jump up and try to catch them. Its funny cause Baby would stay inside until it got dark, then he would go outside and bright and early in the morning we'd hear him scratching on the screen window by the patio. After Laurie died Baby stayed outside her bedroom door for six months. Then one night as usual he went outside but he didn't come back in the morning. I looked all over for him and he would stay across the street under the trailer house or next door to it under the garage. He'd come in the yard to eat and lie around after we got home from work, but he never would come inside again. One morning in the summer of 2001, at the age of 12, he came home and laid down on the front porch and died. We buried him right behind our house.
