Following basic training at Camp Blanding and Jump School at Ft Benning, GA the regiment transferred to Camp Mackall, NC fore advanced training. The 508th shipped overseas in late December 1943.
Already promoted to a Sergeant, John jumped into Normandy on June 6, 1944 - D-Day. He was awarded a Bronze Campaign Star to be worn on the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal for participation in Normandy assault
