Joseph enlisted in the Army in Providence, RI on November 4, 1942 and volunteered for parachutist duty.

He was assigned to Company F, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

He was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for his participation in the Normandy assault on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Joseph was hospitalized at the time of Operation Market Garden and missed the jump into Holland.

In December 1944 Pfc Cananazy went into combat during the Battle of The Bugle. He was wounded in Belgium and received the Purple Heart as a consequence.
