Joseph Francis Carpenter was born at 529 Bucknell Street in the heart of the Fairmount section of Philadelphia (now known as Art Museum area) on Feb.1,1907.
Joseph Francis was the youngest child of William John Carpenter and Ellen Elizabeth Brady. His siblings included:
Maggie Carpenter (1893-1897)
Helen Carpenter Grosso Buck (1896-1976)
Bessie Carpenter Schiavo (1899-1973)
John Carpenter (1903-1960)

Joe grew up in the Prohibition,Great Wall Street crash of 1929 and Depression Eras which may be the reason he was very thrifty: always looking for bargains and finding great buys. He would not hesitate to return an item to the store no matter what if he was not completely satisfied with it.
He grew up in the Fairmount/Brewerytown area(now the Art Museum area) of Philadelphia. Joe was a member of St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church. His future wife, Eileen Cecilia Hines, was from the same parish...and lived just a block and a half away from the Carpenters.
In the 1930 census, at the age of 22, Joe was living with his parents at 810 N. 28th Street. He was working as a porter in an office building. Later on, he worked as a Industrial Contractor Painter and worked on a Landmark Office Building at Broad and Walnut Streets in Center City, Philadelphia. He was also very handy with carpentry and electrical work.
Joe was always well dressed, clean shaven, and kept his full head of hair well groomed. He always wore a couple of rings and a wristwatch.
He was a devoted Catholic. He attended Mass every Sunday. One incident around 1960 his daughter, Eileen, was a bridesmaid in her best friend's wedding (Pat DeWald and Freddy Robinson) in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. The ceremony was in a Protestant Church. Joe would not enter the Protestant Church even though his daughter was a bridesmaid. He stood outside the Church on the sidewalk with his two young sons, Vincent and Billy, until the ceremony was over---"it was the times they lived in then"-----.I guess it was against the Catholic Church to enter a Protestant church at that time-- He did, however, attend the Reception.
