Mrs. Callahan was the middle school librarian at the Episcopal Academy in Merion for the last 24 years and was active in several library groups.
"Her true love, however, was acting," said her daughter, Leslie. "It was her passion."
Mrs. Callahan had appeared in more than 20 local productions during the last 15 years, including starring roles in Driving Miss Daisy, The Foreigner and Road to Mecca with such groups as the Players Club of Swarthmore, Footlighters Theater in Berwyn, the Stagecrafters of Philadelphia and the Episcopal Academy Players.
Her most recent performance in January 1993 was as Mrs. Patrick Campbell in Dear Liar, a two-character play by Jerome Kilty involving the reading of letters between Mrs. Campbell and George Bernard Shaw and produced by the Stagecrafters in Chestnut Hill.
Mrs. Callahan was born in Hollywood, Fla., and raised in Philadelphia. She lived in Merion for the last five years and in Bala Cynwyd for 30 years.
She was a graduate of Rosemont College, where she majored in French and also was involved in theater. Later, she earned a master's degree in library science from Villanova.
She started at Episcopal Academy in 1970, three years after the death of her husband of 16 years, Joseph R. Callahan.
Mrs. Callahan was a past president of the Pennsylvania School Teachers Association and was a member and former officer of the Independent and Pennsylvania School Librarians Associations.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by three other children, Joseph R. Jr., Robert and Brian; a brother, and six grandchildren.
