Del Norte Prospector dated Oct. 27, 1950
Raymundo Gonzales, 67, old age pensioner, was stabbed to death early Tuesday evening by his grandson, Roy Gonzales, 21, at the grandfather’s home at Fifth and Alder. The man was stabbed with a butcher knife twice in the back and six times in the chest.
At least two of the blows from the seven inch blade pierced his heart, one his lung. One wound was eight inches deep. The man was killed instantly.
Roy had gone to his grandfather’s home to help him get supper. The grandmother was in Denver. Gonzales told officers he had suddenly “heard voices telling me to send grandpa to heaven” so he stabbed him. After knifing the older man, he returned to his home and told his father: “I did it; I killed your dad.”
A brother went to the elder Gonzales home and found the man on the bed. He was apparently seated on the bed when attacked, officers said.
A physician was summoned immediately and after examination called Chief Barney Black of the city police force, who took young Gonzales to the city jail. Deputy sheriff Harry Wells was called and came in on the case, as did Coroner W.E. Sharp and deputy John Myers.
Young Gonzales was given a preliminary arraignment on a first degree murder charge Wednesday afternoon before district judge J.H. Thomas. He did not testify but his court-appointed attorney, R.L. Bloss entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity for the youth. Judge Thomas committed Gonzales to the Pueblo state hospital for 30 days for observation. Murder charges still pend. No inquest was held.
Officers said that Gonzales had a police record. He saw service in World War II. He is unmarried. Sheriff Fennell and Chief Black took the youth to Pueblo this Thursday.
