Elizabeth Shirk Dyk, who lived most of her life in Gallatin Valley, passed peacefully in her sleep to join her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at the age of 94.

She and her husband, Simon, were long time members of Grace Bible Church in Bozeman and she was a beloved third grade teacher at Manhattan Elementary School for more than 25 years, teaching up to three generations. Her faithful husband of 61 years, Simon, preceded her into the Kingdom in 2005.

Elizabeth was born Nov. 7, 1919 in Sidney to Homer and Martha Shirk. She attended elementary school at Rose Hill country school, high school in Circle, and received a scholarship to York College in Nebraska. After completing two years of college, she began teaching at the Rose Hill one-room school where she had attended as a child. She spent her summers ministering to children through Child Evangelism with her future sister-in-law, Jeannette Goosen. In 1954, she began teaching at Manhattan Elementary School and completed her undergraduate degree at Montana State University in 1971.

Throughout her life she was a prayer warrior, always keeping index cards by her phone to receive prayer requests and faithfully prayed for others throughout her life. She looked for opportunities to encourage the people God brought into her life. Even after losing her sight, she exhibited a sweet spirit and "can do" attitude that made her a delight and a positive example to her fellow residents in her community. She was a "pillar of her community" and was a well-loved resident at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living in Knoxville, Tenn., from 2007 until her death. Though her body was failing, her spirit was strong, her mind was active until the end and she strove to meet each new challenge as a faithful servant of her Lord.

Her early life was challenging due to the death of her father when she was 10 years old and then her older brother, Lawrence, when she was 15. Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her younger sister, Grace Ginther, and brother, Ashley Shirk. She is survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Lois Dyk of Houston, Texas.

She loved her family and greatly enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to hear of their activities, accomplishments, and struggles so she could pray and encourage her family. She left a legacy of faith for her surviving three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Family members include: daughter, Marlene (David) Holsclaw of Colorado, and their children, Sebastian Holsclaw, Maria (Charlie) McVicker (Emma and Blair), Greg (Tracy) Holsclaw, and Geoff (Cyd) Holsclaw (Soren and Tennyson); son, Warren (Tricia) Dyk of Kentucky, and their children, Andrew (Natalie) Dyk (Sarah and Katherine), and Melinda (Andrew) Seley; and daughter, Janice (Ted) Reed of New Mexico, and their children, Kerry Reed (Katyana, Sydney and Ethan), Kevin (Amy) Reed (Nathan and Bethany), and Kyle (Gigi) Reed (Naomi).

Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. Visitation will also take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, with Funeral Services to begin at 2 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Grand Avenue Christian Church.

There will also be a Memorial Service in Knoxville, Tenn., at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living on Dec. 13th at 11 a.m.
