Charles Jordan Clifford, 90, of Manhattan passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at his home in Manhattan. He was born May 7, 1924 in Moran County Minnesota and was the son of Adolph and Mary (Blie) Clifford. He had eight brothers and sisters to include Joe, Louis, Ray, Lawrence, Christine, Rosella, Dorothy and Helen.

He moved to the Three Forks area and found his first job as a ranch hand for the Dunbar ranch. He discovered a gift for the life of a cowboy and worked for the CA ranch until early 1943 when he enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre as a fireman in the engine room of a destroyer. He married Virginia R. Hager on March 20, 1945 in Helena, Mont. After returning to duty he was honorably discharged in late 1945.

Charley and Virginia moved to Mulligan Canyon and began their ranching life. He raised wheat and Angus cattle. He liked farming/ranching and especially the good friends he made. He especially enjoyed the Christmas parties and other neighborhood get-togethers. He also loved the freedom of a good horse. During these years his children, Donald, Karen and Paul were born.

In early 1952 he settled on the Green Place on the East Gallatin River near Manhattan where he continued to farm and ranch. He hauled milk every day for the cheese factory in Central Park. Charley and Virginia sold the ranch in 1955 and moved to Manhattan. He worked for Yellowstone Pine Sawmill and Trident Cement Plant. He started the job which became his favorite at Manhattan Machinery and worked for Cliff until 1971. Then he worked for Bankers Life and Casualty for several years and retired in 1979.

Charley was a patriot and loved his country and his church. He was a member of the American Legion and Grace Lutheran Church. During his early retirement years he worked with the Laborers for Christ building churches in several parts of the country. He enjoyed fishing at Canyon Ferry or hunting at Bear Creek with his family and friends. His favorite sport was driving through the country backroads with a six-pack of beer. He was quick with a joke and had a snappy reply for any situation.

Charles is survived by his wife, Virginia of Manhattan and his children, Donald (Sue) Clifford of Viborg, S.D., Karen (Vann) Manly of Helena, Mont. and Paul (Gayle) of Three Forks. He has seven grandchildren, Doug (Erin) Manly , Angela (Gary) Leslie, Chuck (Lora) Clifford, Laura (Darin) Parr, Kate Hackl and numerous nieces and nephews. He had a special friendship with his nephew, Roy (Jeanne) Clifford.

A funeral service will be held Dec. 30, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Three Forks. Interment will follow at Mount Green Cemetery in Willow Creek, Mont. Memorials may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, Box 857, Three Forks, MT 59752.
