Lucy Sophia Dunham was born in 1824 to William and Lureny(Sawtell) Dunham in Erie County, New York. She married Joshua Wilson Brown in 1845. She and Joshua moved quite a bit: Ohio, where children Mary (Beach), Frank M, Lorena (Morrill), and Joseph were born. In 1860, they are found in Paint Creek, Kanawha, Virginia (now West Virginia) where Harry W and Ada (Castle) were born. During the War, Lucy's husband fought for the Confederacy. She supported him, but her family fought for the Union. The family fled to a place near Sulphur Springs in Union, Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia) where son Louis William was born in 1863. In 1867, she was in Kentucky where youngest daughter Lucy was born. In 1870, she and Joshua moved to the area now known as Mona township in Illinois. She died at the home of her daughter, Ada Castle, in 1901 of pneumonia. Her husband moved to Florida after her death where he stayed with another daughter, Lorena Morrill.
