Dustin McCowan Charged With Murdering Amanda Bach
Updated: Monday, 19 Sep 2011

Portage, Ind. - Dustin McCowan, 18, was formally charged Monday with the murder of 19-year-old Amanda Bach of Portage.

Dustin McCowan, 18, of Union Township, is being held without bond in the Porter County Jail, and Porter County police said an initial hearing could take place Tuesday.

Bach's body was found at Saturday afternoon about 300 yards from McCowan's home at 338 N. County Road 625W in unincorporated Wheeler after a massive search by hundreds of volunteers.

She had left her Portage home at 10 p.m. Thursday and police found her gold Pontiac around 3:30 a.m. Friday at Dean's General Store on Route 130 in Wheeler. She had gone to see McCowan.

Police said during a Sunday news conference at the Porter County Sheriff's Department that there was trauma to Bach's body. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Indiana University police apprehended McCowan at 6:26 p.m. Saturday on the Bloomington campus as he left the McNutt Hall dormitory and headed to a vehicle, Police Chief Keith Cash said Monday. Cash did not believe the vehicle belonged to McCowan.

Police have said McCowan headed to Bloomington to see friends on Friday on a trip he already had planned.

"My understanding was, he just came down here. He was visiting friends here," Cash said, adding McCowan traveled with friends to Bloomington.

McCowan, who graduated in June from Wheeler High School, was with two IU students at the time of his arrest. Cash said McCowan is not an IU student and he wasn't sure if McCowan stayed on campus over the weekend. The students he visited on campus do not appear to be involved in the case, he added.

McCowan "was totally cooperative" when he was taken into custody, Cash said.

IU police met sheriff's officers halfway between Valparaiso and Bloomington, and he was then transported to the Porter County Jail, where he was booked shortly after midnight Sunday.
