DEATH OF MRS. F. A. DEANS
Well Known Wellsboro Lady Passes Away After a Prolonged Illness.

On Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock Mary Houston Deans, wife of Frank A. Deans, passed away at her home on West Avenue, following a prolonged and exceedingly painful illness. While her friends had entertained but little hope of her recovery for some time past, nevertheless the news of her death came as a great shock to them and saddened many a heart in this community.

Throughout her long and trying illness, though racked with the pain attendant on the ravages of the
disease, she exhibited the same fine temperament and sunny, cheerful disposition that characterized her entire life, her consideration for the happiness and comfort of those about her being foremost at all times.

Mrs. Deans was born in Wrightsville, PA, July 19, 1867, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Smith. When but a child of three she went South with her parents, where she spent her early life mostly in Georgia and Florida. On January 22, 1901, she was united in marriage with Frank A. Deans at her home in Wrightsville and came to Wellsboro, where she has since resided.

Mrs. Deans was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where her loss as an active worker will be keenly felt. As a member of the Red Cross, with her wonderful ability and untiring efforts during the stress of the late war, she was a large factor in the speeding of the comforts of our soldiers in France.

For many years Mrs. Deans was a member of the Wellsboro Friday Club, to which she gave her best efforts in her literary offerings, which were of a high order. The last paper "Marching Through Georgia", presented last December, was a delightful reminiscence of her early life there. She was also a member of the Bridge Club and of the Woman's Auxilary, Champaign Post. No. 84.

Mrs. Deans was a woman of rare personality, radiating happiness and good will, always cheerful and sunny even onto the end. As a friend and neighbor and as a potent factor in the community she will be greatly missed. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Besides her husband, the deceased is survived by a son Neil Houston, of Lawrence, Mass., and a daughter, Mrs. Durbin Grey, at home. A sister, Mrs. S. H. Bell, of Wrightsville, PA and a brother, Robert William Smith of Kimberly, South Africa, also survive.

The funeral will be held at the residence on West Avenue on Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'lock. Rev. David Evans will officiate.
