Nelson Cataract, Civil War

Veteran, Dies at Home of

Chas. King, Aitkin, Minn.

Nelson Cataract. a Civil war veteran passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 17, near midnight, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles King. Mr. Cataract was a native of New England, born in Glensile, Vt., July 4, 1840. At the age of 22 he enlisted in Co. H., 13th Vermont Vol. Inf., T. J. Casey's Div., Army of the Potomac, and was discharged with his company of the battle of Gettysburg.

Mr. Cataract and Miss Delinda Brown were married in 1866 and answering the call of the west came to Durand, Wis., and made their home for many years and were numbered among the pioneers of that locality. Mrs. Cataract died twelve years ago. When she was no longer able to care for the home the parents spent much of their time with their seven children who had grown to maturity. Since the death of his wife Mr. Cataract has lived at the King home and came to Aitkin with the family about three years ago. He was a member of the Methodist church, but owing to declining years was not able to take an active part in many things, which he would have enjoyed. About two weeks ago he began to fail rapidly and passed away having rounded out more than 88 years of a useful, well spent life.

Rev. W. E. Young officiated at the funeral service held in the Methodist church Tuesday morning and the body was sent to the old family home in Durand, where the father was laid to rest by the side of his wife. Pallbearers were: E. A. Marsh, S. J. Warren, G. W. McGregor and Gordon Gray.

Four sons and three daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cataract, George, who died last year in June; Warren, of Norman, N. Dak.; Mrs. Martha King, Aitkin; Fred, of Frederick, Wis.; Mrs. Callas Taylor, Durand, Wis.; Mrs. Lena Jenson, Estherville, La.; and several grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. King and daughter, Elinor, drove to Durand and met relatives on the way who attended the funeral. - Aitkin Independent Age.

Sunset and evening star

And one clear call for me,

And may there be no moaning at

the bar when I put out to sea.

For this from out are borne of

time and place

The flood may bear me far.

I hope to meet my pilot face to

face, when I have crossed the bar.
