The late Wm. Alden whose demise we noted last week, died at an early hour Monday, the 16th, at his Mineral Spring Hotel near Lineville, MO in his 70th year. The cause of death was Bright's disease. The deceased was a direct descendant of the Alden family of Puritan fame who were landed at Plymouth Rock by the ship Mayflower of history. He was born in Plymouth Co, Mass, Sept.21, 1820,and in early manhood came west, doing business for a time in Whiteside Co., Ill., and in 1855 came to Jones Co., making Wyoming his post office. He became interested in farming lands, but followed other occupations for a livelihood for a time. He did considerable freighting from Davenport for business located here. He also taught the first organized school at this place. In 1857 he wedded Miss Emily Williams, who with one son and four daughters survive to cherish the memory of a kind husband and generous father. Two sons died in infancy. Mr. Alden was a thorough businessman and accumulated considerable property, owning perhaps a section of land in Madison Township. His business qualifications and honorable dealings caused his repeated reelection to the various offices of his home township and he was in every sense of the word a model neighbor always ready to do a friendly turn. The funeral obsequies took place at the Hale church at 11 a.m. Thursday, the Rev.N. Shaffer conducting the service, assisted by the M.E. minister of the Hale congregation. These services were largely attended by the friends and neighbors of the family and a large number accompanied the remains to their resting place in the Oxford Junction cemetery.
