Alec T. Anderson, 54, of Kankakee, died Wednesday (Aug. 7, 2013) in Flossmoor.

Alec T. Anderson was born Feb. 26, 1959, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Richard "Andy" Anderson Sr. and Gretchen Hough Anderson.

He was a 1977 graduate of Fenton High School of Bensenville, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and his Master of Arts degree from Governors State University in University Park.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Karen Williams, July 18, 1998 and to their union was born a daughter, Sierra Anderson.

Alec had a very successful career as an educator, coach and athletic administrator, changing the lives of students in every school he taught. He began his career teaching history and coaching in Yorkville. He had coached several sports and became a very successful head football coach at Kankakee High School. In 10 years as a football coach at Kankakee, he directed the school to the playoffs eight times.

Coach Anderson became the athletic director at Urbana High School and coached the football teams there. He was the only coach to guide Urbana High to the football playoffs three consecutive years. As the athletic director in Urbana, his school hosted IHSA track and field conference meets as well as basketball sectionals.

In the athletic director position at Bolingbrook High School, Anderson was the administrator over four successful girls' IHSA basketball championships and a high school football championship.

His most recent contribution was athletic director at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He will be remembered for creating opportunities for student athletes to develop through his football camps, and his guidance in helping his student athletes acquire scholarships at the collegiate level.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Karen Anderson, of Kankakee; one daughter, Sierra Anderson, of Kankakee; two stepsons, Gregory Murphy, of Kankakee, and Seth Whalum, of Champaign; his parents, Gretchen Anderson, of Elmhurst, and Richard Anderson Sr., of Des Moines, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Richard Jr. and Diane Anderson, of Geneva; sister and brother-in-law, Chris and Richard Pehlke, of Naperville; special aunt, Beverly and Jake King, of Athens; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ivy and Preston Williams Jr., of Urbana, Tammy Williams, of Bourbonnais, Samuel Sr. and Naomi Williams, of Atlanta, Ga., and Darryl and Katrina Williams, of Dacula, Ga.; one grandson, Christian Whalum; a special friend, Dennis Dreesen; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
