Mr. Alvis was born in Champaign, Illinois, son of Joseph Edwin and Mildred Pearl Hannah Alvis. He married Carol Sue Clifton in 1962 and Kathleen Marie Dorsey in 1985. Surviving are his wife, Kathy; son, Justin at home; daughter, Janet of Urbana; father, Joe, of Champaign; brothers Jerry, Indianapolis, Indiana, Jack, Mansfield, and Jimmy Joe, Urbana; sisters JoAnn Gust of Wheaton and Jeanine McHenry of Villa Grove. His mother preceded him in death in 1968.
