Mary Jane (Stuart) Chandler died 23 December 1878, aged 50 yrs., 10 mos., 25 days. She was born 29 January 1828, a daughter of Lt. John Stuart, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth McElveen of Williamsburg District. She and her sister Melissa and brother Tom were orphaned when their father died ca. 1832 after which Mason Reames of Sumter District, SC was appointed their Guardian. When her mother remarried and moved out of state, Capt. John Watson and his wife Margaret Emma Salters of Gourdin, Williamsburg District, SC became Mary Jane's foster parents. Her sister went to live with the Henry D. Shaw family and her brother lived with his uncle Joseph P. McElveen and family. On 1 November 1849 Mary Jane was married to Andrew James Chandler (1823-1886) of Sumter District. They had a large family of eleven children.
