Last of six children born to James A. and Arminda Sayles. Lived in San Francisco, CA where he was employed by cable-way street car companies. He learned cable splicing which lead to Tram Construction. After arriving in Telluride, Colorado in 1898, he built or assisted in building several trams associated with the gold mining industry. In 1921 he went to Mexico where he was engaged for 11 years in mine trams. He returned to California in 1932 where it is said he lost a good deal of money in placer operations. He returned to Telluride, CO a year later and was working for the Tomboy Property in Savage Basin at the time of his death. He was never married.
