She attended Winthrop College and worked as a nurse in her early years. She met her husband, David Reed Baer, on a blind date in 1939. She was fond of saying that his yellow Packard convertible was the reason she agreed to a second date. They married shortly thereafter and settled in Rock Hill, SC, to operate Dave Baer Hosiery Mills, Inc. and raise their three children: Harriet, David Jr. and Mary Katherine.
She was involved in numerous community and civic organizations in Rock Hill and was an active member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church for nearly 70 years. She is survived by daughter, Harriet Baer Madden of Spartanburg; son, David Reed Baer, Jr. and his wife, Marian Baer of Hickory, NC; four siblings, Thomas Welsh, Grace Funderburk and Nell Faile of Lancaster County, and Elise Ackerman of York County; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David, and daughter, Mary Katherine Baer Robinson of Gastonia, NC.
