DOROTHY RUTH TAYLOR BARNA passed away Monday, June 18, 2007.

She was born October 13, 1912, in Austin, Texas, the only child of Keith Taylor and Gertrude Piper; her mother died in the influenza epidemic of 1919. Dorothy was raised by her grandmother and extended family in Leominster, Massachusetts. She married Theodore M. Barna on June 15, 1935. Together, they raised two daughters and three sons.

Dorothy enjoyed her role in the lives of her children, her 14 grandchildren, and her 15 great-grandchildren. When her youngest child started elementary school, she attended San Jacinto Junior College, earning an R.N. degree. She worked with dedication as a nurse at Jefferson Davis and Ben Taub County Hospitals, and later at St. Anthony's Center. On retiring from her nursing career at age 64, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Houston. She had a lifelong love of poetry and literature. Starting in the 1980s, she wrote stories and poems, many of which were published in journals around the country. She enjoyed the friendship of writers and readers in several different groups, including the Campanile Writers.

She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Andrew Barna, who died in 1986.

Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, Theodore, whom she loved very much; as well as by her daughter, Trudy Barna-Lloyd and Trudy's husband, John Lloyd; her daughter, Joan Marik; her son, Theodore, and his wife, Mary Margaret; and her son, Joel, and his wife, Laura Furman.

All of her family members celebrate her joy in family and friends, her delight in beauty, her strong spirit, and the love she shared with all she knew. Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, June 19, 2007, with a 7:00 pm Vigil service, at Earthman Bellaire Chapel, 6700 Ferris, Bellaire. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and to the staff of Health Care Odyssey In-Patient Hospice.
