George was born in Ediburgh, Scotland to Mungo Buchanan, Esq. (died 3 Apr 1710) and Anna (Barclay) Buchanan. Mungo and Anna lived in Hiltoun and Auchentorlie, Scotland.
Dr. George Buchanan was one of the founders of Baltimore Town. He was on the Board of Commissioners to lay off Baltimore Town in 1729. Dr. George Buchanan practiced his profession until his death. He signed a will on 4 Feb 1749/50, and his estate was probated on 28 May 1750. He was the first person buried in the Rogers-Buchanan Cemetery on the grounds of Druid Hill Park.
Dr. George Buchanan supposedly built his home called "Auchentorlie" [ohk-en-TROLL-ee] on the site of the current Druid Hill Mansion. There is supposedly an 1850 picture of the Buchanan home called "Auchentorlie" at the Maryland Historical Society. If this is so, it couldn't have been on the site of the current Druid Hill Mansion because Col. Nicholas Rogers (1753-1822) built his first home on that site in 1783. That home burned and Col. Nicholas Rogers built the current Druid Hill Mansion in 1801 on the same site.
The current Druid Hill Mansion is the third home built on the estate. Baltimore City took down the first old Rogers family residence situated on the northwest corner of the estate in 1768. The second home was built by Nicholas after his marriage in 1783 to his cousin, Eleanor (Buchanan) Rogers, but a fire destroyed it in 1796. When a fire destroyed the Rogers' temporary downtown residence in 1801, the family returned to their estate before their new home was completed. Two wings that were planned for either side of the Mansion House were never built.
Possibly the erroneous information that Dr. George Buchanan was the first to own Druid Hill (aka "Hab Nab at a Venture") comes from a biography of Adm Franklin Buchanan written by Charles Lee. Since Dr. Buchanan had 350 acres of "Hab Nab at a Venture" in 1750 and he had only purchased 150 acres himself from Luke Trotten and William Hamilton in 1741, it appears that his wife, Eleanor, had inherited the 200 acres of "Hab Nab at a Venture" which her father had purchased on 1 June 1716 from John and Mary Eaglestone for £50.
On 28 Jan 1752, Eleanor (Rogers) Buchanan released her share of "Hab Nab at a Venture" to her son, Lloyd Buchanan (1729-1761).
