French President. Sadi Carnot was the Fourth President of the Third Republic of France, serving from 1887 to 1894. He was assassinated by Sante Caserio, an Italian anarchist, when he was stabbed with a knife in his abdomen lacerating his portal artery and hemorrhaging to death. Born into a prominent French family, he was the grandson of Lazare Carnot, a noted French hero, who is buried at the Pantheon. He studied engineering at Ecole Polytechnique and at the School of Bridge and Highway at Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees. After serving as a government engineer, he was named commissioner of Normandy and given the responsibility of organizing the resistance during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. After a brief term as prefect of Seine-Inférieure, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies from the Côte d’Or department. Being part of the Left Republicans, he was concerned with railroad development and public works, being appointed in October in 1878 as undersecretary of public works, and in 1880 took charge as minister. Continuing to climb the political ladder, he was elected vice president of the Chamber in April of 1885, serving as minister of commerce and finance. In 1887 he was elected president of the republic without actively aspiring to the office. His term as president was marked with labor agitation, anarchist movement, the attempt of General Georges Boulanger to overthrow the government, and the 1892 Panama Canal Scandal with the lost of millions of dollars. After delivering a speech at a banquet in Lyons, he was stabbed to death. He was buried with his grandfather. Caserio never denied his action of avenging other anarchist’s executions, and after a trial, faced the guillotine at sunrise on August 16, 1894
