Daughter of Col. John and Sophia (Clark) VanMeter. Granddaughter of Revolutionary War Veteran Isreal Clark and his second wife Mary Kendell Clark. Nancy was born in Berkley County (West) Virginia and traveled with her family to Grand Prairie Township, Marion County when she was a young child. She married John Burtsfield and the couple had four children: Madison, Franklin, Sophia (who preceded her in death in 1862), and John Wesley. Nancy died on December 13, 1864 - her son John Wesley's sixth birthday. She was buried at Ricky Fork Cemetery and a marble tombstone was erected.
A second, granite-style marker (Cenotaph) bearing her name and the name of her husband's second wife was installed following the second wife's passing. Her husband's information was added to stone after his death in 1906.

There are two memorials for her in this cemetery the other is a listing with her Husband and his second wife.

Gravesite Details

The cemetery is remote and difficult to get to. A boy scout group planted myrtle to keep the weeds down. The problem with this is that it hides the graves that have collapsed. There are noxious weeds including poison oak around.
