Clay was born in Streatham London as Nicholas Anthony Phillip Clay.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his acting career in the early 1970s with small parts in film and television.

His most widely seen screen performance was as Lancelot in the film Excalibur.
He also appeared in Agatha Christie's "Evil Under the Sun".

In the last years of his life he taught drama at the Actors Centre and the Academy of Live and Performing Arts.

Clay was the husband of Scottish actress, Lorna Heilbron. They were married in 1980 until his death and had two daughters.

Nicholas Clay died of Cancer aged 53.
