Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1853 and served in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate Corps of Engineers as part of General Braxton Bragg's staff and commanded all engineers and artillery in Pensacola, Florida. In 1862, he was appointed Colonel, chief engineer of the State of Georgia. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1863 and served as General E. Kirby Smith's chief of staff in the Trans-Mississippi Department until the end of the war. After the war, he was a civil engineer and a professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
