Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, then as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for St. Louis, Missouri. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “faithful and meritorious services”. A long time participate in Minnesota state politics, he served as Secretary of State for Ohio from 1855 to 1857, then as Secretary of State for Minnesota form 1860 to 1862 (an office he left to command the 10th Minnesota). After the war he was the United States Commissioner of Pensions from 1871 to 1875, and United States Surveyor of Minnesota from 1875 to 1879.
