Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 102nd New York Volunteer Infantry. At the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, on November 24, 1863, he sustained a wound to his right leg, which necessitated its amputation. Unable to serve in the field because of it, he became Major of the 7th Veterans Reserve Corps, which he served in until the end of the war. On March 13, 1865 he received the brevets of Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Major General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Lookout Mountain, Tenn." On Match 2, 1867 he received the brevets of Brigadier General and Major General, US Regular Army for "meritorious services during the war". However, his commission was not confirmed by the United States Senate until March 3, 1869, in the last batch of Civil War brevet promotions. He served in the post-War Regular Army, retiring in 1870 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He then became a prominent Pennsylvania lawyer and railroad official before his death in Brooklyn, New York City in 1912.
