Wife of Oliver B. Burkhart

Mrs. Oliver Burkhart, a Christian County pioneer and one of Garrison’s splendid ladies, passed away at 11:50 o’clock Friday evening, August 12th at the family home, two miles northeast of Garrison, after an illness of long standing. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Applegate from the Baptist church Monday afternoon, August 15th. A large number of friends attended the church services and followed the remains to the Garrison Cemetery, where they were laid away. Mary Alice Jones was born in Missouri on July 21, 1864 and at the time of her death was 63 years and 21 days of age. One November 12, 1885, she was united in marriage to Oliver B. Burkhart, who was with her at the time of her death. To this union were born nine children, three sons and six daughters. An infant son, one brother, George Jones, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Jall T. Jones, all preceded her in death. In 1914, she was converted and united with the Missionary Baptist church here, of which she was a member until her death. She was a kind, lovable lady, a devoted wife and mother and popular with all whom knew her. A woman who will be missed, not only by her husband and children, but by the people of the community in which she lived so long. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Oliver B. Burkhart, eight children, Mrs. A. C. Nelson, Mrs. N. C. Ives, Mrs. Frank Coens, Lloyd C. Burkhart and Miss Lola Burkhart, all of St. Johns, Kansas, Mrs. W. H. Stevens of Augusta, Kansas, Mrs. J. L. Workman of Garrison, Mo. and Sterl Burkhart. One brother, W. A. Jones of Garrison and two sisters, Mrs. W. R. Lyons of McClurg, Mo. And Mrs. W. H. Workman of Garrison, MO. Also survive.
