From "Our Bogue Story" by Margaret Goddard
"Anna Margaret Bogue was born March 17, 1868, in Henry Co., Indiana, daughter of Amos and Phebe [Reynolds] Bogue, their seventh child. She told her children that she was taken to Iowa in a covered wagon when she was six months old. She is two years old in 1870 census of Dallas, Co., Iowa, Dexter, Adams Twp.
Anna told about her childhood to her granddaughter, Dorothy [Harvey] Lindamood, who wrote about it in a theme for a high school class. "As she grew older, most of her time was spent out of doors with her nine brothers and sisters...Horseback riding was her favorite sport. Her hobby was weaving carpets. At the age of 18 she wove 14 yards which was considered a good days work. Her only toy was a homemade wagon...very plain and crude."
School days were spent at Greenwood School. While not going to school, she worked very hard at home. She often helped her father shell corn. This of course was done by hand. When it was shelled it was taken to be ground at a mill, which was run by a water wheel. She told about gathering wild crabapples and help make apple butter, which was stored in a ten gallon jar.
Anna was married February 21, 1893, to Florian Allen, by a Quaker minister at her parents' home in Oralabor, south of Ankeny, Polk Co., Iowa. Their parents had lived in different places in Indiana, quite close to each other.
Earlier ancestors on both sides had lived in North Carolina.
Soon after the marriage, they went to Nebraska in a covered wagon and lived in a sod house. After about two years, they came back to Ankeny, Iowa, near where their families lived. Their oldest child, Arline, was born February 23, 1895. Son Ardrey was born June 22, 1896, and Pheobe Lois, April 30, 1899.
They had a boarding house and at times a hotel. Anna told Dorothy that she often would bake 60 loaves of bread in a week. The family is in Lee Twp., Des Moines, Fremont St. in the census of 1900, probably a temporary residence to be near some work. Son Merwyn was born October 21,1912. Anna was famous for her quilting. She did a lot of work in her garden, growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. Raising canaries was one of her activities. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge and attended the Methodist Church. They lived in different houses in Ankeny. Florian was a carpenter, plasterer, mason, cook and mail carrier. They worked hard all their lives, never had much money, but were greatly respected by all who knew them. Florian died April 10, 1937, and Anna, May 23, 1940, buried Oralabor Cemetery."
