Actress. Daughter of George, a civil service clerk, and Florence, a schoolmistress, she attended the Sacred Heart School in Hammersmith. Her first movie role was in 1936 in "Broken Blossoms, two years later she first appeared on television in "When We Are Married." She worked steadily in radio, movies and television, most notably in "The Benny Hill Show," "Bootsie and Snudge," and"Til Death Us Do Part," and "The Good Old Days." Her work playing the title role in "Edna, the Inebriate Woman," garnered her a British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) in 1971. In the movies, she had supporting roles in over forty movies, such as "The NeverEnding Story" (1984), "A Fish Called Wanda," and "Willow" (both in 1988). Throughout her career, she appeared in over twenty-five various television roles. Her career was highlighted in 1972 in a "This is Your Life" episode. She was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1988. Her final appearance in the 2002 film "Crime and Punishment" was posthumous.
