Cecil Milton Hepworth, an important British film pioneer. His studios were in Walton on Thames and their site is now named after him. Remaining as a monument to him is the Walton Playhouse theatre, which building served as an electricity generating station. Though associated with the silent era, it is notable that he made inroads in to talking films, In 1910, with synchronised sound using his own Vivaphone system, long before they were introduced by Hollywood. Hepworth was active at Walton on Thames from 1899, shortly after he was sacked by the American Charles Urban, to 1924, when the business went bust.

Hepworth's studio was the most important in what has come to be known as Hollywood on Thames - a string of studios set up in south-west London, where the air was cleaner than elsewhere. Other studios were:-

Pavilion, Regent, Climax, Crystal, Kinecolor, EC-KO, Weir House, Phoenix, Marble Hill, London Films, Samuelson, Clark Labs, Homeland and Broadwest.

Local production companies included Master Films and Folly.
