The son of Philip William & Eliza (Dosch) Burg, in 1860 he was a doctor living in Loganville, York County, Pennsylvania, with a woman listed as "Maggie," who gives every appearance being his wife. However, he married Sarah Holtzworth or Hines (depending on which of their children's death certificates you are reading), and fathered Mary Ellen (b. 05/27/64 - married Ernest C. Bowers), William Henry (b. 04/07/67), Charles Holtzworth (b. 11/01/72).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg, date not listed, and mustered into federal service there September 21, 1862, as assistant surgeon for the 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. The muster roll reflects a pending "charge for 'neglect of duty'", but no general court-martial record was found, and he honorably discharged with the regiment May 15, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 12, 1864, as surgeon for the 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

In 1870, he was living with his family in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and remained a Lancaster County resident until January 12, 1906, when he entered the Soldiers' Home at Johnson City, Washington County, Tennéesee, where he remained until his death from "morphine poisoning." Whether his death was accidental or suicidal is unknown.
