Ellis T. Austin "Ed", son of early Norwegian pioneers Christian F. and Anna Hage, was a third generation Norwegian born on September 25, 1915, in Toronto, SD. He passed away on June 11, 2014.

Ed spent his formative years in the Pacific Northwest, where he had a distinguished career from teaching in public school in the late 1930s before becoming a journeyman carpenter, building American defense projects in the Kodiak region of Alaska, before joining the United States Army in 1943.

Ed served in the US Army Air Force from 1943-1946, serving 3 years in the China-Burma-India Theater. After he was honorably discharged in May 1946, he married Jean Cole of North Carolina, the love of his life, whom he met at a USO dance in Wilmington N.C.

Thanks to the GI Bill Ed was able to continue his true passion, education. He received a BA Degree from University of Washington with in 1947, and his PhD in Economics from Michigan State University, East Lansing in 1955.

In 1955 he moved his family to Pittsburg, PA to begin teaching at the University of Pittsburg while finishing his dissertation. He was granted his doctorate degree in December 1955. Although he loved his office on the 21st floor of the Cathedral of Learning where he could look down on the Forbes Field and watch the Pirates play ball, he knew that the ‘golden state' was the place to go and landed a professorship at the School of Business at California State University, Fresno in the fall of 1958. He retired in 1985 after 27 years of teaching in the Finance Department.

Ed obtained many honors during his teaching career, including the opportunity to represent Fresno State at the Tenth Annual Forum on Finance at New York University Graduate School of Business Administration; participated in the Eight Visiting Professor's Case Method Program at Harvard in 1962; was a special consultant on excise taxes working with the California Legislature, who published "California Excise Taxes on Cigarettes, Alcoholic Beverages, and Horseracing" a major tax study researching the effects of tax policy in the early 1960's. His research was cited by the Oakland Tribune in 1965 "State Sin Tax Assailed by Business Prof." He was also a special research consultant on the Governor's 1968 Advisory Commission on Tax Reform, which was reported in the Fresno Guide "Highway revenues fail to keep pace with needs."

He loved teaching, playing cards, playing pool, deep sea fishing, spending summer vacations building his cabin on Puget Sound, wood-working, dancing with Jean (and winning trophies), and raising three daughters. He felt fortunate to have such a wonderful family. He described his grandchildren as "exceptionally talented".

Along with his educational pursuits, travels and professional life he and Jean raised a family of three girls, Pamela, Vickie and Lori. He was so proud to see each of them graduate from college and go on to successful careers and full-filling lives with each having children of their own.

He enjoyed sharing his lifelong stories of growing up during the Depression, traveling and serving in WWII. His stories and "can-do" spirit will live on through family and friends.

Dad was preceded in death by his wife Jean, who passed away December 27th, 2013. He felt fortunate to have such a wonderful family.

He is survived by his three daughters, Pamela (Brian) Jones, Vickie (John) Moore of Bakersfield and Lori (Tom) Daniells of Harvard, MA; and five grandchildren, Aaron Jones, Andrew and Alison Moore and Austin and Alexandra Daniells, whom he described as "exceptionally talented" in his autobiography. Ed's Norwegian work ethic and ‘can-do' spirit lives on through his family. His life stories will live on through family and friends.

Ed was always willing to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Fresno County, 4991 E. McKinley, Suite 123, Fresno, CA 93727.

Services will be held at Farewell Funeral, 660 West Locust Street in Fresno on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. For condolences please visit www.farewell.com
