Specialist Four McIlvoy was a member of the Kentucky Army National Guard's C Battery, 2d Battalion, 138th Field Artillery stationed at Firebase Tomahawk, Thua Thien, South Vietnam.

In the early morning of 19 Jun 1969, the 72d Sapper Company, 4th Regiment of the North Vietnamese Army attacked the firebase. Specialist Four McIlvoy McIlvoy and 8 other artillerymen were killed in the attack.
