August's patronymic is Andreasson. In Minnesota Andreasson was translated to Andrew and became his middle name. Alm is the name his father used when he was a soldier. August's father is Andreas (Andrew) Johansson Alm the son of Johannes Ekstrom and Catrina Larsdotter. His mother is Christina Svensdotter, the daughter of Sven Stolt and Catrina Andersdotter. When he was born the area he was born in was called Hägnan, Sundals-Ryr Parish, Älvsborgs lan, Sweden. His siblings are Carolina Carlotta (Lottie) who married Jonas Johnson, Ahl Andrew (Ole)Alm and John Andrew Ekstrom. August emigrated from Sweden with his mother in 1868 according to the Sundals-Ryr Swedish Household Records. In 1876 he and his brother Ole opened the first store in Forest Lake, which they sold in 1877. He married Christina Peterson on November 23, 1882 in Forest Lake. They had six children: Lillie Hima 1883-1886, Edwin 1884-1886, Esther Lillian 1886-1957, Ed (Edward Ahlm) 1888-1948, Freda (Fritz) Christine 1889-1989, and Arthur William Ahlm 1891-1980.The family story is that he gave the land to start the cemetery when his first two children, Lillie Helma and Edwin died from Scarlet Fever in 1886. Cemetery records record that he was at the January 13th, 1885 meeting to organize the cemetery. Another family story is that he gave land to start a school known as the Alm School house. He was a charter member of the Swedish Lutheran church in Forest Lake. He was a deacon who preached once a month. Fritz talked about how he read his Swedish Bible every day. In 1908 he took his children to Denver, Colorado to improve his health. In 1909 the family went to Wild Horse, Colorado to homestead. From there he moved to Lewistown, Montana and Burley, Idaho. He often came back to visit in Forest Lake. He moved to California in 1926 to be near his son-in-law Thomas McNevin's family. He had money set aside so that he could be buried with Christina. His daughter Freda Christine Alm McNevin, grandson Jack, and granddaughter Marcy brought August's casket back to Forest Lake from California on the train. I have a picture on the memorial of the final paragraph in his Forest Lake Times Obit from 1927.
