SODA SPRINGS — Frank Tearle Athay, 69, of Soda Springs, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Salt Lake City. He was born Dec. 27, 1932, at Paris, Idaho, the son of Russell and Elva Jane Rich Athay. He married Joyce Matthews May 22, 1951, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They were later divorced. He married Janet L. Hubbard May 7, 1983, in Paris.
Tearle was raised and educated in Paris, Idaho, graduating from Fielding High School in 1950. He also attended Barber School in Salt Lake City. He moved to Soda Springs in 1962, where he owned and operated Athay Barber Shop for many years. He returned to Paris in 1976, where he farmed, then returned to Soda Springs in 1990.
His hobbies included camping and hunting with his family, working with cattle and farming; he enjoyed dancing and visiting with his many friends.
He is survived by his wife Janet of Soda Springs; five sons, two daughters and their spouses: Scott Athay, Paris; Gregg and Diann Athay, Boise, Idaho; Shawn and Melanie Athay, Boise; Kyle and Melissa Athay, Bennington, Idaho; Monte and Heather Hess, Afton, Wyo.; and Jeannette and Warren Westbrook, and Toni and Shawn Bullick, all of Soda Springs. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, LuAnn Athay Burdick.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 25, at 11 a.m. at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs with Father John Worster officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Paris Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Sims Funeral Home.
